RRU wins United Way 2009 Post Secondary Challenge Cup!

RRU received two United Way campaign honours Jan. 27: winner of the Post Secondary Challenge Cup and a tie for Chair of the Year to RRU campaign chair Cecelia David.

The honours were presented at the 2009 Spirit Award ceremony held at the Empress Hotel where  the United Way of Greater Victoria announced that it had raised $6.7 million in last year's campaign.  The Spirit Awards are held to acknowledge the commitment of community leaders to providing important funding and services to our community.

The Post Secondary Challenge Cup is earned by the institution with the highest increase in the amount raised and percentage of participation.

RRU President AllanCahoon, leadership chair Deborah Zornes all agreed that re-gaining the cup felt good  after losing it to UVic in the 2008 campaign.

Cecelia was also thrilled about her own award.

"I am glad that I won because I love winning stuff but, the truth is, I would have happily 'lost' to anyone in that room," said Cecelia. "Everyone who gets involved in community support efforts is a winner.  When you’re doing something that makes an investment in your community, you’re a star.  And I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many!"

Deborah was excited by the number of new leader donors this year and is already thinking of ways to get even more!  She credits the efforts of the committee and the willingness of the donors for making her job so “easy”.

Congratulations, RRU, for winning the cup, sure…  but mostly for being the sort of place that recognizes the importance of giving to the community and for your willingness to do so.

‘Til next year…
